Maui day 1

Having a great time in Hawaii! We arrived here yesterday around noon Hawaii time and have already seen a lot of country. We're staying in a town called Makawao (Maak-a-wow) in upcountry Maui. We drove down to the beach town of Pa'ia (Pie-e-uh), had a nice lunch, and dipped our toes in the ocean. When we were here 4 years ago, our bike ride from the top of Haleakala ended at the very beach we stopped at today. What a pretty spot! This is on the northern shore of the island and is more violent than the south and west. Basically, that means they actually get waves, unlike Ka'anapali. We decided to make the drive up to the top of Haleakala yesterday as well. It's about 30 miles to the summit at 10,023 feet and was a little cold! It was about 40 degrees, but about 20 with the wind chill. But oh, how beautiful! When we came here last time, the weather was horrible and we couldn't see anything. Not so this time. We had great visibility and saw some fantastic sights! Fun trip so far.
