Mormon Tabernacle

Our ward had the opportunity to clean the Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City. The sign up sheets went around in Elder's Quorum and Relief Society independent of each other. Therefore, Jen and I signed up independent of each other.

We got to the Conference Center this week - a behemoth of a building with 1.4 million square feet - only to learn that they weren't expecting us (our stake president and his bishops hadn't communicated well and he called the center saying no one was coming).

Not to fear, there's always work to do. We walked over to the Tabernacle and had the chance to mop all the hardwood floors beneath every bench in the building (main level and balcony). With seven of us, it still took us nearly two full hours. During our time cleaning, the sister missionaries serving on Temple Square would bring in tour groups ranging from 2 to 50 people and sit them down on the benches in the Tabernacle. Every so often, another sister missionary would walk to the front and demonstrate the pin drop experiment. She'd stand there and -- without a microphone -- say her name, where she was from, and then tear and crumple a newspaper, drop three pins, drop a small nail (probably a brad or something), and then turn around and speak toward the choir seats. We could hear it all and sat through probably 5 or 6 of those demonstrations during the two hours we were in there. I took a video of the demonstration and have uploaded it to Google Video. Check it out here.

It was kinda fun to walk around in the tabernacle and even up to the pulpit. We don't usually get to get that close to that part of the building, so it was fun. And as sad as this sounds / is, it was like a date for Jen and I. We've probably been out without the kids 2 times since Lauren was born (Feb. 2007), so this was a rare occasion for us.

I tried to get Kristy to sign up too, but it just didn't work out with other kids and kindergarten and as it turned out little awards program at the school.
However, it was still great to go and serve although interesting to hear the surprise of appearance to the conference center staff.
I still think we should have gone for a little look through the upper door in the balcony. ;)
As for the sad-as-it sounds date, we know how that is with three little ones, so call in advance and we'll take the girls so you go on a "real" date.

You can always make arrangements with your good old Mom and Dad and we'd come up there and watch the girls so you could go out on a date. Stinkers -- you know you can call us any time! (You had better snag the offer before July 21st cause we won't be available for a while.)
I have always wanted to sign up and help clean the Provo Temple, but it's always during the day in my work-time hours and I can't go. I'm glad you had the opportunity to do this.

How fun, even if it was cleaning. I can totally relate about it being a date...I am not sure the last time we went out with the kids...I am pretty sure we haven't been out on a date since we have moved here, a year ago! And call us anytime to watch the kids...they would have fun playing together again.

Brent got to clean the conference center and the SL temple a few times while we lived there. He always said it was a really neat experience. If only cleaning at home were that cool!

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about--I cleaned the LDS Conference Center last week. Wow! what a job.
