Canonized Reading

We read from scriptures as a family every night. The Primary organization in our church challenged each family to read The Book of Mormon during 2009. We're doing alright and are ahead of schedule (we're in Alma 27). We have the kids read outloud or repeat verses we read to them. Abby is the only kid who can read, and boy can she read. She's still in kindergarten for a few more weeks, but tonight she read 10 straight verses. The funny thing is we didn't ask her to read 10 straight verses. We asked her to start and she didn't stop until she'd read an entire column and two additional verses on the next column. She stumbled on about 5 words in that entire section. What a smarty. Here's what she read: http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=alma+27%3A+10-19&do=Search

Yes, Abby is an excellent reader. I volunteer in the kids' Kindergarten class and she is definitely one of the best. She reminds me so much of our Baileigh...now Karsten on the other hand?! Guess he can't be athletic and SUPER smart. Poor kid we are just happy that he is at least average on the "smarts" scale. =)

holy crap! That's awesome. I can't believe she can already read that well. That's very impressive and you should be very proud of her. By the end of the school year, most kindergarteners can only identify a few words. That's so great!

Wow! You are right, that is one smart little girl.

We have been reading the scriptures every night with our boys since Jan. 2008. We are only in 2 Nephi 19. At this rate we will finish the Book of Mormon when Will is 18. At least we are trying right?

She is pretty great. FYI, I re-read my post and should have had Abby write it. I had about 3 typos that I've since edited. I shouldn't write blog posts while I'm watching the news. It invariably gets me into trouble.

Abby amazed me with her reading a year ago, so I can't imagine how much beter she's gotten! Way to go Abster!

Hey, here's a thought! Why don't Sarah, Alyssa, and Abby all start a summer book club? Alyssa might be much further ahead than the other 2, but she could join in if she wanted to! They could each take a turn picking a book for 2 weeks at a time then email or call each other to talk about it. It might be a good way for me to keep Sarah reading this summer.

Reading the scriptures with the family was one of the ways several of our kids learned to read. We'd let them read "And it came to pass..." every time it came up so they got to read a lot - and they got used to the words and then took off from there. It's a great way for kids to learn to read well. I'm really glad that Abby is interested enough to read - and that is one way to interest them - have them take turns reading.
Keep it up you guys!

Two things here: we were reading together as a family before this primary challenge but were moving along at the pace Adrianne mentions. We'd barely read a column a day. Then we realized we had to step it up if we were to read the entire thing this year and it's actually been easier than expected. We read between 2 and 4 columns a night.

Also, the girls have begun asking, "Okay, what's happening here?" I'm just glad they started asking those questions in Mosiah and later rather than 2 Nephi. -Jess
