Toothy Grin

The time has come to congratulate Abby on the successful completion of her first full year of public school. It was an eventful day: Abby "graduated" from kindergarten -- no, don't worry, there were no graduation ceremonies -- and she also lost her first tooth.

First, about her schooling. Abby has been an excellent reader for a long time. When she started kindergarten, they tested her and she was already reading at a 1st grade level. When she finished and was retested last week, she was well in to a second grade level. In fact, 1st graders are supposed to be reading levels D through H (those don't mean anything to me and won't to you, either). Abby was reading level M last week. We say that acknowledging that during the test, Abby exhausted the teacher's reading testing materials, so she may be reading beyond level M. We read scriptures every night with Abby so she's getting plenty of chances to read bigger words. We also understand that reading does not equal comprehension, so we don't have grand illusions that she's understanding everything she reads. Neither do I.

Now, on to her tooth. It's been loose for over a month and it was getting pretty wobbly this week. She was having problems eating because it was hurting when she bit on food. She was sad to not be able to eat corn on the cob last Sunday. Well, today, I told her to grab her tooth with her two fingers and said, "Just grab it and pull up." Well, she actually listened and did just that. The tooth came out. We clapped and cheered for her, but she immediately started crying. Sobbing, in fact. I ain't kidding. Just look at the photo.

She was crying for a couple reasons. First, it hurt. Second, it was a bit traumatic. Third, she looked in the mirror and said, between tears, "I don't think it looks good" and even said she wished she could put it back in her mouth. She also said we weren't to tell anyone about it because she didn't want people seeing the new gap in her teeth. I am in for some SERIOUS TROUBLE WHEN SHE GETS HER FIRST ZIT.

She calmed down later and even reported to Jen that, "...well, I guess I do look pretty cute." Whew. Now, if only I'll be able to convince her that zits are fine and everyone gets 'em.

I think she looks so cute with the missing tooth. If she was my age and had a gap like that, then there is a problem.

You are in for some trouble when she gets older. She is the most adorable drama queen I know. Nothing could make Abby less beautiful. Way to go on losing your tooth Absalicious.

love it! Who knew that losing a tooth would be so traumatic? Altough I'm with you, Abby. I think I was exactly the same way. Hated losing my teeth! And Jen, I'm with you on the zits thing! Sarah is already very concerned about getting zits in a few years, and asks to use my face cleaners all the time. What on earth are we gonna do to convince them they look fine??

Abby was well over the trauma on Friday when they stopped by here. She looked very cute with that little missing tooth. Hopefully with all our reactions of congratulations and "job well done" she will not be so worried with the next one.
I told her that I used to be so afraid of losing my teeth that I wouldn't let anyone pull them - I'd eat until the food would pull it out and sometimes I'd even accidentally swallow the tooth. I hate all things related to teeth and I was a much bigger baby about it than anyone I have ever known.
I'm really proud of the fact that she actually pulled it out by herself.

Great job Abby on your reading skills! That's fantastic! Let Abby know Laura lost a tooth this week, too! A Molar. Laura thinks she looks funny, too. Well, after watching the video clip, I agree, you are in trouble when her first zit shows!

Hey!!!! I was so glad to see a message from you on my blog. I can't believe you have a kid old enough to be losing teeth and she is such a little "Jen" which is the best part. Things are good- it is going to be 112 in Phoenix this weekend which is too hot to do anything. Man, I miss Utah. How are things for you?
