There has been some controversy regarding the Cougars doing this, but I think it's ill-founded for two reasons:
- The Haka is meant to intimidate the opposing team. The All Blacks in New Zealand perform the Haka at midfield while facing the opposite team. It's an in-your-face moment. The BYU Cougars perform the Haka at about the 10-15 yard line and they do it facing their student section. There is no problem here. It gets the fans pumped up as much as any of the players.
- I'd say more than half the BYU football team is of Polynesian descent! The Haka actually means something to them! Why wouldn't those players participate in such a "war cry?" It's totally legit. I love it.
